So you’ve gone to the effort and excitement of having an awesomely gorgeous, state of the art website for your business but… if your ideal audience cannot find it, it will only ever be a spangly ornament-of-digital-perfection on the that dusty, world-wide shelf.

So let’s give your digital-baby pride of place on those search engine rankings and drive in those visitors! It’s time to get your SEO on – that’s right entrepreneurs-of-awesomeness, it’s time to optimise for search engine greatness!

Add SSL to your Website

Let’s start simple – Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL for short (now that’s a little simpler), are certifications that verify the security of your website, starting with the servers its hosted on – and of course we all know how important security is. You wouldn’t leave your shop door unlocked or your customers details on display for everyone to see, so similarly you need to make sure your website is safe and secure for you, your business and your visitors. Google and its search engine friends like to keep everyone safe, and it favours those websites that have good security ratings, so adding a simple SSL Certificate will definitely be a digital thumbs up for your Search Engine Optimisation – SEO baby!

Going Mobile Friendly

In this super-fast paced world where information is at our fingertips – like literally, on the phones at our fingertips – internet users and your potential customers want their information fast. Search engines know this and, always eager to please their searchers, they favour those websites that load faster, and so do your visitors. Also, 60% of all internet usage is done on a mobile device and mobile devices like mobile-friendly websites that can adapt to their screen size and load as quickly as busy fingers can click. Making sure that your website is mobile-friendly will not only help your SEO and search rankings, it’s also super simple to do with most good website builders.

Content, content, content!

As you will likely figure out on your website journey, it’s your website content, which is crucial to achieving great search engine results, after all its this content your site visitors have come to see, and Google has come to crawl and play about in. Sooooo much research has been done to figure out the optimum amount of content to make Google and her friends happy little search engines and its fairly agreed upon that, ideally, you need around 600 – 700 words per page (this includes your headings and links) but it most definitely needs to be more than 300!

Alt Tags

All of those stunning images that you’ve sprinkled creatively amongst the words of your website, make sure to give them the ‘alt tags’ they deserve. Alt Tags or Alt Text is used in the tags/description of each image and its basically a ‘wordy version’ of what the image portrays. These Alt Tags tells the search-engine-gods what your image is, because although search engines have phenomenal digital powers, their eyesight is not so great when it comes to ‘seeing pictures’. Also, Alt Tags are super useful for any visitors to your site that may have visual impairments and use screen readers to get the most out of your content – so super points, high fives and feel-good-feelings for inclusivity!

Include links to the other pages of your site and to other almost-as-awesome-as-yours-websites.

Of course Google likes links to other websites, what do you think it does best – that’s right, link its visitors to sooooo many websites! After all, search engines are all about linking people to the information they need and so they naturally – ok maybe man-mad digital entities are not natural, but – they algorithmically are going to favour websites that provide, prioritise and share value for their visitors. So get linking to other awesome content, but remember you only want to be linking to websites that are credible and provide genuine value for your visitors, and of course ones that make your biz and your website look awesome too.

Sign up for Google Search Console and submit your site map to Google

Just like we need maps and to-do lists to navigate our way around life, Google needs a map of your website in order to really take in the sights and awesome content you have to offer – just imagine your favourite holiday and the perfect tourist map of all the must-see places that you cannot miss, that’s what your site map is to Google. And don’t forget to sign up for Google Search Console, because if Google is having any trouble navigating your map or thinks it could be better, its going to tell you right here on the console – oh, and its free!

Add an SEO plugin to your website

Lastly if the wordy, world of search engine optimisation still seems like a daunting task, SEO plugins are great for helping to identify how to improve your website for those better search engine rankings. These plugins crawl your content and tells you what’s working and what’s not so great, and they even suggest what changes you can make. Many plugins are free with paid upgradable features and our favourite is Yoast which works brilliantly with WordPress and has a great visual element to help you get to grips with your SEO.

So entrepreneurs, grab yourself a cuppa, power up those keywords and go forth and optimise!
